Criminal Justice course in London
UCCS BACJ and MCJ students can study the history and roots of US Criminal Justice in London, England this summer from July 10 - 17, 2017. This faculty-directed course will facilitate meetings with members of the Royal Courts of Justice, House of Parliament and more. Excellence in Teaching: Katy Cathcart Receives Prestigious WACJ 2016 Innovative Teaching Award
Katy Cathcart, UCCS School of Public Affairs' Senior Instructor of Criminal Justice, has received the 2016 Western Association of Criminal Justice (WACJ) Innovative Teaching Award! The WACJ is an affiliate of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) and awards faculty who demonstrate excellence and innovation in their teaching practices in higher education.
Katy will present about her innovative teaching strategies at the upcoming conference in Las Vegas, NV October 12-14.

Regina Winters Tapped as Prestigious Ethics Fellow
School Public Affairs' Assistant Dean and Senior Instructor, Regina Winters, has been chosen as one of seven faculty UCCS faculty members to serve as a UCCS Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Fellow for 2016-2017. Seven faculty tapped as ethics fellows.
Faculty Conference Presentation: American Correctional Association
On August 6, 2016, Senior Instructor Katy Cathcart and Dr. Susan Jones will be presenting and conducting a workshop at the annual American Correctional Association Conference.
Title: "What Does the Culture Have to do With It? Boundary Violations and Staff Misconduct"
Topic: This workshop will look into the relationship between the correctional culture and its effect upon staff misconduct and boundary violations. Aspects of the culture will be examined to include staff support for each other, the effect of staff misconduct upon the work environment, and the effect of sexual harassment from offenders. This presentation will discuss the effect that these aspects have upon the professional image of corrections work. Solutions for culture change will be presented that will challenge the attendees to look at this in a whole different light.

Faculty Alert: Michael Landon-Murray
At the 2016 annual conference of the International Studies Association, Dr. Michael Landon-Murray was elected as an Intelligence Studies Section (ISS) editor for a news and information partnership with H-Intel, a venue for “scholarly discussion and collaboration on intelligence.” He will be pursuing exploratory projects such as an intelligence studies data repository to help increase empirical intelligence research as well as bridging the gap between intelligence research and practice.
Dr. Michasel Landon Murray was recently selected as a course and program certification reviewer for the International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE).

Dr. Don Klingner and Dr. Roberto Moreno Espinosa, co-edited "Using the ‘Narcotrafico’ Threat to Build Public Administration Capacity between the US and Mexico." This Spanish-language book was originally published and has been published in Mexico, "La Tormenta Perfecta: El tráfico en las drogas ilegales en la zona fronteriza Mexico - Estados Unidos y las administraciones publicas."

Distinguished Professor Don Klingner Presents in Mexico
Early February 2016, Distinguished Professor Don Klingner co-coordinated a 3-day conference at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM). Dr. Klingner presented on "The Importance of professional associations in strengthening public administration", "Drug trafficking and public administration in the trans-border region of the US and Mexico", and "Public administration in the US and Mexico: A comparative perspective" during the conference.

SPA Podcast Series: Criminal Justice Conversations
October 12, 2015: The School of Public Affairs' radio show Criminal Justice Conversations has been moved to a podcast to allow students and others to easily access the show’s interviews anytime throughout the semester. The show features criminal justice professionals from Southern Colorado, and presents professional perspectives on the criminal justice academic and career path.

CDOC Contract for Services
July 1, 2015: The School of Public Affairs congratulates Dr. Stephanie Ryon, Anna Kosloski, and Henriikka Weir for the renewal of the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) contract. Dr. Ryon is the Principal Investigator and Drs. Anna Kosloski and Henriikka Weir are the Co-Principal Investigators of the contract between CDOC and UCCS. Since 2014, the School of Public Affairs has been leading the contract, providing research and evaluation services, managing Professional Research Assistants, interns, and student employees, and offering direction on emerging avenues of empirical inquiry within Corrections.
Student Spotlights
July 8, 2015: School of Public Affairs' MPA alumnus, Stuart Sockman, performed his capstone project for the MPA program on emergency preparedness in the Pikes Peak region. Working with the Colorado Springs Council of Neighbors and Organizations (CONO), Sockman conducted his research on "Perceptions of Wildfire and Flooding Preparedness in the Pikes Peak Region. CONO subsequently requested Sockman to deliver his presentation at the CONO meeting in July.

The School of Public Affairs congratulates Dr. Henrikka Weir and Dr. Anna Kosloski on the publication of their article, “Melding theoretical perspectives: A gendered look at low-resting heart rate and developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior.” This article was just published in the March issue of “Criminal Justice Studies: A Critical Journal of Law and Society.” This volume is a special issue on biosocial criminology.
